Coaching Skills

We all know that the basics of basketball are shooting, passing, dribbling and footwork.

To be an effective Coach, it is then essential to be able to develop the individual skills listed above within a team structure.

As there are fundamental skills for the game, there are also fundamental skills that we would like to encourage with Collingwood Coaches.

These are;

Support and Encouragement: Players develop confidence from encouragement and support.

Communication: Coaches need to interact with players and parents with patience, compassion, respect, and an open mind. Direct communication and a clear message. It is said that junior players retain only three key messages and usually only the last message sinks in.

Positive Attitude: A Coach needs to reflect a positive outlook in all circumstances. Players and parents observe closely how a Coach responds to situations, good or bad.

Development: One of the key indicators of a successful season is the growth of the individual and the team. It is the Coach’s duty to develop the individual player’s skill and their knowledge of the game. With a player’s development, the team develops.

Basketball IQ: Basketball knowledge is something that players and coaches gain with experience. It is important to develop each player’s knowledge and understanding of the game and how it is applied to the bigger picture. This applies to the Coach.

Enjoy: A no brainer, enjoy what you do, it is reflected onto your team.
