Dear Parents and Guardians
Club staff and volunteers contribute many hours – often after work – to compile domestic teams each season. It is a painstaking process that takes into account numerous considerations and preferences – many of which are often in conflict.

For the coming summer season, the Girls and Boys Domestic Team Composition Sub-Committees have had to work to very tight timeframes due to COVID – putting together some 100+ teams in half the time they normally have.

The Committee of Management kindly requests that you bear this is in mind when reviewing the placement of your child in their chosen team. While the Club understands there is sometimes disappointment with team placement, please also understand that for this coming season team composition has been a particularly difficult process.

Any queries regarding the teams should be emailed to juniordomestic@collingwoodbasketball.com.au Queries will be responded to as soon as possible but please understand there could be some delay

On behalf of the Committee of Management.

Spectators

U18 and below players are permitted ONE spectator, where the player requires parental supervision. This can be a parent or a sibling, but not both. The exception is if a parent is the coach or team manager or scorer, then the player can have one other spectator.

U20s are now permitted to have one spectator in the stadium. Coach, team manager and scorer will be admitted.

More information on the Basketball Victoria Return to Sport guidelines are available here: https://basketballvictoria.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/BV_2020_ReturnToSport_Guidelines_23Nov.pdf

Scoring (new – PlayHQ on iPads)

With the move to PlayHQ, we will be using ipads for scoring and a new scoring system. Information about the new system is available here. If you have time, it would be great if you could familiarise yourself with the new system prior to the game

  • At the beginning of each game, team information needs to be set up. Players expected to play need to be selected. It’s really important that following the completion of the previous game, Team Managers (or an informed parent or the coach) go to the scorebench and ensure the “scoresheet” is set up correctly. Singlet numbers will need to be checked or added for players
  • If any player is not listed and you need to add them (eg they are new to the team or they are filling in). You need their name, date of birth, suburb and postcode

Timing Rules (different)

Due to the cleaning requirement between games, games will be running on 2 x 15 minute halves.

The timing regulations are available here

COVID requirements

  • All people entering a stadium must provide their name and phone number on entry (unless a player who is listed on the team list). See spectator regulations above
  • Many stadiums, including Collingwood’s will have QR codes available for registration
  • Stadiums will have separate entry and exit points. At Collingwood, entry will be via the Campbell St gate, and exit via the McCutcheon Way doors
  • Everyone must sanitise their hands on entry
  • Maximum TWO basketballs per team in the stadium. One of these should be the Molten supplied team basketball. Basketballs should be sanitised on entry
  • At the completion of each game, all players and spectators must exit the venue promptly so that it can be cleaned. Teams will be able to enter a maximum of 10 minutes prior to their game, subject to departure of previous teams and cleaning having been done
  • Also see mask information below

Masks

Approved face coverings should be worn by all patrons over the age of 12 years, on arrival and departure from the stadium and at any time when not participating. Referees, coaches or other people in non-exertive roles must wear a face mask unless a lawful exemption applies.

Players and officials may choose to wear a mask during competition, provided that the masks are made of a non-abrasive, soft material such as paper or cloth and attached to the ears with elastic. Those choosing to wear a mask whilst playing basketball or officiating should seek medical advice prior to doing so to ensure they understand any personal risks associated with wearing a face mask during physical exercise. They should limit their court time and if experiencing shortness of breath or dizziness you should immediately take a break until they return to normal and consider removing the mask.

No Zone Rule

The EDJBA has adopted Basketball Australia’s “No Zone” policy for U8s to U14s. This means that teams in these age groups are not allowed to play zone defence. “Any defence played inside the three-point line which does not incorporate normal man to man defensive principles shall be considered to be a zone”.
The EDJBA approach is one of communication and education:

  • NO action should be taken during games
  • Do NOT approach the referees, they are not responsible for enforcing this policy
  • Do NOT approach the Venue Supervisor, they are not responsible for enforcing policy
  • Do NOT approach or speak to the coach playing zone
  • There are NO in game penalties
  • If there are concerns about the defence played by a particular team during the season, then this should be communicated to the EDJBA here: EDJBA Zone Defence Feedback
  • If the team is playing a zone defence, this will be communicated to their Club, who will be required to provide education to the coach on acceptable man to man principles

Detailed information about the policy is available here. If you have queries about how to implement the No Zone policy, please email or call Gani Sakiri, our Head of Coaching, on coachingdirector@collingwoodbasketball.com.au or 0417 365 574.

Mercy Rule

The Mercy Rule is not applicable during grading (the first three rounds of the Summer 2021 season).

Coaches and Team Managers

Thank you to the many people who have volunteered to be coaches or team managers. We still have some gaps for coaches and team managers – if you can help out or suggest people who might be able to help please email juniordomestic@collingwoodbasketball.com.au.

If you know of anyone else who is interested in joining a team, please ask them to email juniordomestic@collingwoodbasketball.com.au. We already have some players on waiting lists to join teams.

If you are managing a team in the Summer: You will be emailed player and coach contact details as soon as possible. You will also receive information about what you need to do in the first couple of weeks of team managing. Most of the information the players in your team need to know will be emailed to them and/or is available here. A Team Manager’s information night will be held early in the season, date to be advised. This will be aimed primarily at new team managers. A team manager’s handbook is also available here
